Choosing paint color is the part of the project everyone thinks is fun and everyone secretly stresses about. After more than 50 years of painting Bay Area homes, I can tell you the same thing goes wrong most often: people pick a color they love in the store, get it on the wall, and hate it by day two.
The color itself is rarely the problem. The way you chose it usually is.
Start with the light in your actual room
Paint color changes based on how much natural light hits the wall and what time of day you look at it. A gray that looks sophisticated in a north-facing bedroom can look like dirty concrete in a west-facing living room at 4 PM.
Before you commit to a color, get a large sample (not a tiny paint chip). Paint makers such as Benjamin Moore sell sample sizes of most colors. Paint at least a 2 foot by 2 foot area on the actual wall. Look at it in the morning, at noon, and after sunset with your normal indoor lighting on. If you still like it after all three, you have a real candidate.
Match the finish to how the room gets used
The color decision is only half the choice. The sheen is the other half, and it also affects how often you will need to repaint.
- Bathrooms and kitchens get moisture and cleaning: use satin or semi-gloss
- Living rooms and bedrooms get low traffic: eggshell or matte reads better in photos and softens imperfections
- Hallways and stairwells get bumped and scuffed: satin holds up

Getting this backwards is a common cause of “we just painted this and it already looks bad.” A flat wall in a hallway wipes down poorly and shows every hand mark.
Think about the whole house, not one room at a time
Rooms that connect visually should feel like they belong together. That does not mean same color everywhere. It means the colors should share undertones and read as a coherent palette when you stand in one room and look into the next.
The simplest way to do this: pick three colors that all share the same undertone (warm or cool), and use them across your open living areas. Save the bolder choices for rooms with doors that close.
Test your neighbor’s opinion carefully
Getting input from friends and family sounds smart. It usually is not. Everyone has an opinion about color, and everyone thinks their taste is universal. If you pick by consensus, you end up with the safest possible beige.
Trust your own reaction to the color in your own light. If you like it and it works with the room, that is the answer.
