What we work on

Decks, porches and fences

Sun dries out deck boards and fences, and rain and shade keep some parts damp, so the wood around a house wears faster than the walls. We clean, prep and stain or paint it, as a job on its own or together with an exterior repaint.

  • Decks: floor boards, railings and stairs
  • Porches: floors, posts and rails
  • Wood fences
  • Stain or paint, chosen with you for the wood and the look you want
  • Damaged wood shown to you and quoted separately; you decide

Stain or paint?

Stain soaks into the wood and lets the grain show. Paint forms a film on top and hides the grain. On a surface you walk on, such as a deck floor, a paint film can wear through where people walk most, which is one reason many homeowners stain deck boards and paint the railings, posts and trim.

Wood that has been painted before usually stays painted, because stain cannot soak through old paint. At the estimate we look at what is on the wood now and go through the options with you. Your proposal then names the product, the color and the number of coats.

If prep turns up soft or rotted boards, we show you and quote the repair separately before any extra work, and you decide. For more on telling cosmetic wear from structural damage, read Deck Staining vs. Replacement.

Deck graying or the stain wearing thin? We will look at the wood and recommend stain or paint in writing.

How a deck, porch or fence job runs

The prep decides how long the finish lasts.

1

Look at the wood

At the estimate visit we check the boards, posts, rails and the spots where wood stays damp, such as where a deck meets the house.

2

Clean

Dirt, mildew and gray, loose wood fibers washed off so the finish can reach sound wood.

3

Let it dry

Stain and paint go on dry wood only, so the schedule allows drying time after cleaning and after rain.

4

Sand and scrape

Rough and splintered areas sanded smooth; loose paint scraped off surfaces that were painted before.

5

Protect what is next to it

House walls, plants and walkways beside the work covered before any stain or paint goes on.

6

Apply the finish

Stain or paint applied in the product, color and number of coats named in your proposal.

Common questions about deck, porch and fence work

Do you stain decks, or only paint them?

Both. We stain and paint decks, porches and fences. Which one suits your wood depends on what is on it now and the look you want, and we talk it through with you at the estimate.

Can you tell me whether my deck needs repair before it is stained?

Yes. At the estimate we point out soft or damaged wood we can see. If more turns up during prep, we show you and quote the repair before any extra work, and you decide. Our article on deck staining and replacement explains what to look for.

How long does a deck, porch or fence job take?

It depends on the size, the condition of the wood and the weather. Your written proposal gives the timeline for your job. Wood must be dry before stain or paint goes on, so rain can move the schedule.

Can you do my deck at the same time as the house?

Yes. Deck, porch and fence work can be part of an exterior painting project or a job on its own. Your proposal lists each surface separately.

Is the estimate free?

Yes. Estimate visits are usually scheduled the same week or the next, and every estimate comes as a written proposal with materials, prep steps, coat count and timeline.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. Our California contractor license is CSLB #603312, for General Building and Painting, and we carry general liability and workers' compensation insurance.

Is your deck, porch or fence due?

“After an initial agreement on a color choice and once sampled on the house, I wasn't pleased. Chris authorized six different color samples to arrive without any additional costs until I made my final choice. Not only are we pleased with the outcome, a few neighbors asked for the contact info.”
