Bay Area weather is friendlier to exterior painting than most of the country. That does not mean any time is fine.
Best months: April through October
The window between April and October is when we schedule most exterior painting. Consistent dry weather, temperatures in the ideal paint application range (50-85°F), and low humidity produce the best paint cure and longest-lasting results.
Within that window, some months are better than others:
May and June: Prime months. Consistent temperatures, low humidity, dry weather. Books up fastest.
April and October: Also excellent, though occasional weather variability. Book with weather flexibility.
July, August, September: Fine for most projects. Watch for extreme heat waves that push surface temperatures too high for optimal application.
Months to avoid if you can
December through February: Rainy season. Paint does not adhere well to damp surfaces. Cure time extends dramatically in cold weather. Multiple weather delays are common on winter projects.
Late November through early March: Similar issues. We do exterior work in these months when project timing requires it, but with adjusted expectations for delays.
What matters more than the calendar
Actual weather at your project location matters more than the month:
- Surface must be dry when painting begins
- No rain in the 24-48 hours after painting
- Temperature between 50°F and 90°F during application
- Surface temperature not in direct hot sun (surfaces can be much hotter than air temperature)
- Humidity below 85%
We monitor forecasts (the National Weather Service Bay Area office is a good source for yours) and delay applications when conditions are not right, even during the “good months.” This is a common cause of schedule adjustments.
Timing to catch problems early
Regardless of when you paint, catching exterior issues before they get worse saves money:
Wood rot spreads. A small area of rot in October will be a larger area by next October. Painting projects that include wood rot repair are cheaper when caught early.
Peeling paint fails progressively. Once paint starts peeling, it accelerates. Waiting a year while paint continues to peel means more prep cost when you finally schedule the repaint. Faded paint stops protecting. Paint that has lost color has usually also lost protective quality. Faded exteriors are due for repaint regardless of visual appearance.
Planning around your schedule
During peak season, ask each painter how far out they are scheduling. Booking earlier gives you more choice of start dates.
If you have a specific event driving timing (selling the home, hosting a wedding, HOA compliance deadline), book earlier. Weather delays can push completion by a week or two.
Off-season considerations
If you must paint during winter months, plan for:
- Longer overall project timelines
- Weather-driven schedule adjustments
- Slower cure times between coats
- Higher likelihood of touch-ups needed the following spring
- Some prep work (pressure washing) may need to happen days before painting
None of these are dealbreakers, but they change what a normal exterior project looks like.
The exception: fully-covered surfaces
Covered porches, some balconies, and protected exterior surfaces can be painted in more weather conditions since they are less affected by rain and direct sun. If your exterior project is limited to covered surfaces, seasonal timing matters less. Bottom line
Aim for April through October. Book early during peak season, and ask each painter how far out they are scheduling. Accept that weather can shift timelines by a week or two. Do not delay a needed repaint from October to next April if peeling has already started.
