Homeowners often ask what a painting project will look like day-to-day. Here is a realistic walkthrough of what happens.
Before the project starts
The estimate visit. Ken or Chris walks through the project areas with you. This takes 30-45 minutes for most homes. We assess prep needs, discuss colors, note any concerns, and answer questions.
The written proposal. You receive a detailed proposal within 3 business days. It specifies rooms and surfaces, prep steps, paint products, coat count, timeline, warranty terms, and total price.
Approval and scheduling. Once you approve the proposal, we schedule your project. Typical scheduling window is 2-4 weeks out during busy season.
Color selection. If not decided at the estimate, you finalize colors before we order paint. We can bring color decks, provide samples, or offer color consultation as needed.
Day 1: Setup
The crew arrives at the scheduled start time. Setup takes 1-2 hours for a typical whole-home interior project:
- Furniture moved to room centers and covered
- Floors covered with drop cloths and paper as appropriate
- Fixtures, hardware, and switch plates removed
- Windows, trim edges, and outlets taped off
- Ventilation set up (fans, open windows as weather allows)
If any prep issues surface during setup that were not visible at the estimate, we address them with you before proceeding.
Days 2 through mid-project: Prep and priming
Most interior paint failures trace to inadequate prep. This is where the time goes.
- Cleaning surfaces to remove dust and residue
- Scraping any loose paint
- Sanding rough spots and glossy surfaces
- Filling nail holes and small dings
- Caulking gaps between trim and walls
- Priming bare wood, patches, and stained areas
This phase varies from one day (simple repaints) to several days (significant prep needed).
Mid to late project: Painting
Two coats standard. First coat goes on. Adequate dry time between coats (varies by product, typically 4 hours for wall paint). Second coat.
For whole-home projects, we work in a logical sequence so you can continue to use most of the home throughout. Bedrooms first if you sleep at home. Living areas later. Kitchen and baths scheduled around your usage patterns.
Cleanup and touch-ups
At the end of each day, we clean the work area. Tools stored, drop cloths folded, walkable paths cleared.
At the end of the project, we complete a full cleanup: hardware reinstalled, switch plates back on, furniture returned to position, drop cloths and paper removed.
Final walkthrough
Ken or Chris walks the project with you. We inspect every painted surface together. Any touch-ups or corrections you notice get added to a punch list. We complete the punch list before the project is considered finished.

Timelines can vary based on prep needs, weather (for exterior overlap), and any unexpected issues discovered during work.
What “done” looks like
The completed project should feel like the room the homeowner imagined. Colors as chosen, coverage even, no visible defects, edges sharp, hardware reinstalled, cleanup complete.
The warranty documented in your original proposal begins on the completion date. If any workmanship issue surfaces later, we come back and address it under warranty.
